Medicinal Plants of the Climatron®

Banyan
Banyan
Ficus benghalensis
Moraceae, the mulberry family
Native to the Indian subcontinent
Banyan belongs to the fig genus. The bark is used in traditional Indian medicine to treat diabetes. Banyan bark reduces blood sugar in animal studies. Other fig species that reduce blood sugar have been tested in humans. Most traditional medicines for diabetes are not as powerful as modern drugs, but they were better than nothing. People today might use them together with drugs.

This is one big tree! Legend says that Alexander the Great’s whole army sheltered beneath a giant banyan.
