Over 25 percent of our modern drugs derive from plants, and yet less than 2 percent of all plants have been tested for medical applications. We cannot know in advance which species could provide lifesaving drugs. In the face of accelerating habitat destruction and global climate change, nearly half of the world's plant species may be extinct by the end of the century.
