The following programs are designed to enhance your visit, therapeutically, to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Programs held at the Garden run between 1½ to 2 hours, unless otherwise noted. Light refreshments will be served.

To register for these programs, please download a printable individual program registration form, fill it out, and mail it, with payment, to the address listed on the form. Garden admission is free for those who enrolled in Therapeutic Horticulture Programs. Please bring your confirmation form with you the day of the class.

If a class you are interested in is listed as “Full,” you may add your name to a waiting list which will be used if registered participants cancel before the date of the class. Please mark your registration form as “waiting list.”

Orchids

Top 10 Orchids for Your Home
Growing orchids in our homes has become widely popular in the last several years because, although perceived exotic, most are inexpensive and easy to care for if one follows a few simple rules. This talk discusses one orchid hobbyist’s favorites and how to grow them in the home without a greenhouse or any special equipment. Take home an orchid for your home collection.

Sneak Peek at the Best New Plants for 2010
Discover the best new plant introductions for Spring 2010 including a repeat blooming lilac, a pink Annabelle-type hydrangea, and all the new annual and perennial selections that will be hitting the greenhouse shelves this season.

Instructor: Jennifer Schamber. Jennifer Schamber is the General Manager of Greenscape Gardens in St. Louis, Missouri. She is the 2007 Green Profit Magazine Young Retailer Award winner and her garden center is recognized on Today’s Garden Center Magazine’s Revolutionary 100 List for the past three years. She is focused on community-oriented business practices and is involved in Habitat for Humanity, the Master Gardener program, and serves as President Elect of the Landscape & Nursery Association of Greater St. Louis and a Vice President of the Hort Co-op of Metro St. Louis.

MyPyramid

Eat Smart—Be Active Series
Eat Smart Be Active is a program that incorporates both nutrition information, based on the recommendations of MyPyramid, and physical activity. The lessons are highly interactive and include ample time for small and large group discussions. Food tastings and light physical activity are integrated into each lesson, creating a fun and informative learning environment.

Instructor: Mary Wissmann, MS, RD, LD. Mary Wissman is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in the state of Missouri with a Master’s Degree in Nutritional Sciences.She is the St. Louis County Nutrition and Health Education Specialist for the University of Missouri Extension, and specializes in teaching community programs about basic nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness. Her goal is to significantly improve the health and wellness of clients through small, easy lifestyle changes.

Each spring the wild areas of Missouri burst forth with a colorful display of wildflowers. We will discuss interesting facts about the flowers and learn the best places to find them in the area.

A History Walk through the Victorian District
Join us for a walk through the Victorian District of the garden and the Tower Grove House. From a historical perspective, learn how Henry Shaw developed one of the nation’s leading botanical gardens at his country estate, Tower Grove.

Beneficial Bugs: A Plant’s Best Friend
Learn how to protect your plants from pest insects by encouraging the presence of their natural enemies. Meet the common beneficial insects and find out how to invite them into your garden. Be prepared for a short walk into the Garden to look for insects.

Instructor: Chris Hartley. Chris Hartley is an Entomologist and Educator at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Chris has his Masters degree in Entomology and has described 16 new beetle species. Insects are a special interest of his, but he is fascinated by all living things.
